POSCO Park1538 Exhibition Hall — Civilization of Iron
Civilization of Iron
Light following visitors
Park1538 Exhibition Hall, 1F, Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do
Opened to the public April 12, 2021
In POSCO Park1538's circular Civilization of Iron gallery, we tracked visitors' movements so light could follow their feet. Motion-recognition software connected to moving lights creates real-time interaction responding to walking direction and position.
Born of water, fire, wind and earth,
iron, the flower of civilization
In an 11-meter-high circular hall, 360° imagery wraps the walls and floor to tell the story of iron. Within media content by d'strict and GIANTSTEP, responsive floor spotlights add an experience of walking through the space.
With every step,
light finds you
As visitors move through the hall, motion-recognition software reads their changing positions. Ceiling-mounted moving lights turn toward them, casting circles at their feet. Even with several people moving together, each light follows its own visitor.
Enter the hallThe software reads visitors' positions as they enter the circular floor.
Light beneath your feetThe ceiling moving light turns to place a circle of light beneath the visitor.
Light follows as you walkThe light follows each step, with one light assigned to each person.
From reading a position
to directing light
We operated motion-recognition software and linked changing visitor positions to moving-light direction. Before installation, simulations tested multiple moving targets; on site, walk-through tests aligned the visitors' movement with the light at their feet.

- Read positions
Track where visitors move in real time.
- Control light direction
Change the moving lights' aim to match the detected positions.
- Respond with light
The light beneath each visitor moves with their steps.
