A garden for resting in moonlight
Exhibition Room 2, Norimaru, Seomyeon, Busan
2022.09.01 – 09.08
A room with a great moon rising beyond a reed bed.
Recline on a beanbag and look toward the moonlight and forests on six screens, taking a quiet moment to rest.
A storybook garden in the sky,
brought indoors
The 2022 Busan Arts Education Festival, “Waruru, Ururu, Moya,” took “Jack and the Beanstalk” as its theme. For “Organic Gallery” at Seomyeon Norimaru, we imagined the sky Jack reached as a moonlit garden. Moon and cloud lights, six screens among the reeds, and low lighting formed a single landscape.
One room,
a moonlit reed garden
We placed the moon at the center of the short end wall and lined three walls of the long exhibition room with reeds. Three portrait screens stood among the reeds on either side of the moon. Beanbags occupied the center, with white plinths near the entrance.

the moon rises
The moon is a large circular light printed with an image of its surface. Illuminated clouds wrap around its sides and base, hiding the lower portion so that it looks like a moon just risingabove the reed bed.
One forest,
six windows
Three portrait screens stand among the reeds on each side of the moon. Together, the six screens show different views of a single 3D forestin a looping sequence with animals appearing across the displays.
Forest animals and changing light connect the six screens into one landscape.
At the roots of the reeds,
small lights
We placed small bulbs among the soil and bark at the base of the reed beds lining three walls. Low, warm light illuminates the reed stems from below.
A quiet room
for a moment of rest
There is no conversation inside the room. Visitors recline on beanbags and spend time gazing at the moon and screens.
